Production! Breaking it down

In production there is 4 stages which is development, pre-production, production, and post- production.

In the development stage we are going to be focus on getting the basic elements of film production. I must have my legal information assists in securing the cognitive property. I have to give my self time to get my funding in place, I will have to make sure I have my cast members, and my written script.

In the per-production stage this is where I will need to have my set and costume designs, location and the preparation for shooting my production. I will have to get crew members who would control the lighting, electrical, camera operators, assistant directors, sound personal, make-up and hair and plenty more. As you can see it's lots of things to have in preparations before actual starting the production.

We are finally to the production stage and in this stage I will be filming my movie or film. This is when the things I did in the development and pre- production stages will come together. I will applying the skills I've learned and developed in the class and from my research to this film.

After the production stage I will then start on my post-production. I will be taking my film and edit it. I will mainly be making sure I take the unnecessary parts like the bloopers out, adding the sound/ music that's needed for the film, adjusting lighting or colors if I need to, adding my title and applying any special effects if needed.

The production companies that have done similar movies towards my idea are Blumhouse Productions and Warner Bros. I believe Warner Bros would be more of an ideal choice to produce my film...I mean who wouldn't want a production from the Warner Bros. If I produce with a large production company my film will more likely be seen because of who's producing it. Having a smaller producer company produce my film may not get as much ratings compare to having a lager company produce. The larger companies have a bigger span of audience compared to a smaller company, so I will get more viewers to watch my production.

I will persuade the production company that I have a worthy film to finance by giving a pitch and telling them my goals what's the production about, how I'm going about to create my idea, and how I plan to schedule and organize my time. It will also be useful if I give them my deadline and update them on my project. I will sound very persuasive and educate when I'm pitching my ideas to sell my film to the company.

Production Technology

It felt like years, but I finally made it to the production stage...Yayyyy!

The technology I will be using the camera from my phone to film my production. As for lighting I used different sources depending upon which scene. For example for my kitchen scene I used the light in the kitchen light plus my ring light. My living room scene I used all light sources including celling fan light, the light from the television, and any other light surrounding the scene area.

As I was filming I had my actors project their voices since there was not mic included in my production.  When using the camera on my phone it was held with my tripod so that it would be easier to do my dolly-in and move the camera position from on spot to another. The tripod made it easier to record my film.

The opening sequence

Opening sequence for my genre 1/17/21

In horror films during the opening scene you would sometimes see what’s known as a flashback. That’s when the film director would go to a moment that happen in the past or before the event took place. Other movies would just jump straight into the movie. It all just depends on what the director or producer would was to do.

During this opening sequence you should get a feel on weather or not you will like the movie. The movie should graders it’s viewers attention without revealing to much but just enough to have you want to know what’s going to happen. It should set a mood and tone between the screen and the audience.

The first 2 minutes of a horror movie isn’t usually to much going on but that depends on what type of opening sequence it is. See if the opening sequence starts off with a flashback you would mostly likely be hit with a lot. The first 2 minutes of the movie is like a warmer up to how good the movie might be.

Shooting schedule

I schedule for my film to be shoot in two different days. I will be shooting my first scene February 26, 2021. This day I will only be doing my first scene since the two actors will be available this day. The next two scenes will be film the following day February 27,2021. Scene two and three will be shot which will be my last film day of my production. I will then began editing the film and combining it into a two minute short film.

I used a website call Studio binder it help me break down my script in the different scenes and what character is involved in each scene. I will be using my phone camera, tripods, and ringlights to film my production.

Sound, costume, lighting... Action!

Since I will be shooting my film at night, for the scenes that's outside I will be using soft lighting so it can look natural. For the indoors film I will be using the lights in the house and so studio light not to much.

As for sound I will be  including only necessary sound effects that will add more of a scary feel to my film. For example I will use an eerie sound for my sound effects so that it can be more dramatic. In the begin I will be playing music as the film is opening. I will be recording my sound in camera recording.

My character that is playing the two teens costumes will be one in night gown clothes and the other one will be wearing regular everyday clothes. The bad guy in this case the scary creep will be wearing ragged clothes. The scary creep makeup will involved scars on his face and blood.

Location and scouting

I will be filming my film in a easy to access location which is my house. This will be the best fit because I don’t have to worry to much about the sunlight or outside noises. My actors and cast members will all be in a familiar surrounding. Then here go the great side of it all... it’s all cheap!

I will have my family members and friends act in my film. My mom will be playing the character mom, Nay will be played by my cousin Tiyana, Brianna is played by my friend Evena, and the scary creep will be played by my cousin Tyree. This is my cast members for the film.

When it comes to filming I have to make sure my cast members are prepared and available on my filming days.

Casting

We are now getting closer and closer to production and I can honestly say this have been a roller coaster. I decided to pick my cast to play on screen by there personality. I have also let them audition for the parts and picked which is the best fit. My on screen cast members are fun to work with and ready to film. As for my off set cast or behind the scenes I have two people who will be helping me with the lighting and camera position. I will like to say I  made a great choice and I can’t wait to work with them this upcoming week.

Update! March 2nd

There were some last minute changes which really made it challenging. One of my  cast members who were supposed to play Briana bailed on me and I don't have anyone else who could played that part. Now for any scene that involves Briana I would have to play and hopefully I can find ways to work around it. This problem really cause me to be really concern on how can I both record and be the character, but I know eventually I would figure it out.

Storyboard...building my film!

During this process I mainly broken down my script and put it in pictures. It was easy to do my story broad because I added the different camera angles and shots I want to interrupt  in my film script so that when it was time to do the story broad it will be easier on me. Trying to estimate the duration of each shot can be kind of tricky though, but I hope it was a good estimate. I have three scenes and 16 shots the broad is also a part of the pre-production stage.

Film pitch

This process took me about 20 retakes to finally get through my whole pitch. It actually felt as if I was pitching my film to the Warner.Bros, but I felt like I got my point across.

In the film pitch I will be convincing the production company on why they should choose to pick my film to fall under their company. So I will start the a greeting because that's shows manners and professionalism, then I will talk a little about my film and the budget. I will also include the distributor I want to support my film and why I think this will be a good fit for my film.

Before picking a production company think to yourself  "What do they have to offer for your film?" Once you know that then it will be easier for you to sound interested and convincing. Keeping confidence in you face and your speech can also help you sound convincing. You should also try to pick a large production company because they have a bigger audience and they can help fund you more.

My case study

 The Conjuring (Director: James Wan)

Target audience:

For the movie The Conjuring the target audience will be in the age range of 15-24. The way the movie is present and marketed to the audience it will gravitate to the target audience attention because of the mysterious presentation in the trailer making them want to see more. This film will also appeal to both male and female because in this film it is representing a family with both genders present. It will also target any audience that is fans of the Warren family which the movie is basoff a case they once did in the past. This film does represent a violent and supernatural event but is entertaining to audience who are interested in demographic images or events.

Marketing:

This film made nearly $100 million worldwide and was first released 19th of July 2013. They first promoted their movie on face book with an image with the characters of Ed and Larrain Warren in 2012. They later released a teaser trailer in New York Comic con 2012. The “base on a true story” played a large part in marketing the film and adding wonders to what the film is about. There was plenty of promoting on social media platforms such as Twitter and Facebook which they were posting posters and film clips.

Ideas on paper... The script

Coming up with the dialogue was kind of trick especially knowing you only have 2 minutes to film because you don't want to get to wordy and you don't have enough time to say half the things you wrote. As far as the storyline I just knew that I had to get start to the point, but once I knew how I want it to play out the dialogue became quite easy and fluent for me.

        SNEAK PEEK!

Writing this script kind of reminded me of writing a play expect from the narration and stage direction. I can't wait till we get to the production stage so I can see my characters come to life. I can't wait till we get to the production stage so I can see my characters come to life.
